Every town has a monthly bric a brac market and most have a weekly 'farmers market' where you can buy anything from fresh vegetables to Benfica tops.
Portugal is specially known for its ceramics, embroidery (bordado), farm crafts and of course regional produce.
The Algarve markets are plentifully stocked with crafts and produce from the entire country. Cheese, cured ham, farm bread, olive oil and a glass of red wine can be bought anywhere and with lots of picnic spots around, may not even make it back to the villa.
In the centre of all towns can be found daily food markets, sometimes specialising but often just divided into meat, fish, fruit and vegetables. These must be visited just to see the colours, smell the freshness and hear the busy market bustle Portuguese style. Most markets have a café somewhere so you can take a break after you've bought your dinner.

The Algarve region is well known for its unique styles of pottery and ceramics. You will see them displayed along the road sides outside the potteries where they are made. Portimão is an excellent place to purchase many Portuguese traditional crafts with century-old designs which local traders still make into palm and rushwork items, various objets d´art in copper and tin, baskets, lace and footwear. More modern items for sale include painted textiles and tapestries which are often decorated with regional motifs.
On the bustling pedestrianised streets of the Ruas Comercio and Vasco da Gama (which begin at the old market square near the parish church in the old part of the town) you will find hand knitted sweaters, hand painted porcelain, leatherware, woodcarvings and literally tons of pottery from factories and local artisans from all over Portugal. In Rua Direita you will find Gaby’s which is a popular local store selling beautiful embroidered linens, cottons, sheets and bed covers.
For the most up to date merchandise you should visit the enormous Continente shopping mall which has every type of shop imaginable under one roof.
There is an ample number of shops providing for the needs of visitors as well as many gift and souvenir stalls and shops selling pottery, leather goods, jewellery and embroidered linens to name but a few of the most popular items.
